It will be five years next month that my husband and I have been caring for my grandfather with dementia. We have no family help and have been able to access a few resources, but it's just not enough. We got a call earlier this week from a Day Center Social Worker who told us that they got an approved contract with the VA, and my grandpa would be able to go for free, 5 days a week, with transportation! My husband and I immediately started crying with joy. We were SO happy. We can't afford anything that would really lift how overwhelmed we are, nothing more than a few hours a week. So this was absolutely life changing. I clarified a ton of times with the SW to make sure she was correct in her understanding, because I've been working with the VA for 6 years now trying to get help. She assured me that the Day Center would be covered in its entirety.
Monday was a Holiday, so I had to wait to call the VA until Tuesday. All Monday, it was like such a weight was lifted. We were talking about all the things we would do and how all of our hard work has finally paid off. Then, Tuesday came, and I called the VA only to find out that the Day Center SW was completely wrong. She didn't understand her own fucking contract. I spent all day getting the numerous SW's involved in contact and the information the Day Center gave was indeed entirely wrong.
We are crushed. So fucking devastated. We finally saw a light, some hope, only to have it ripped away. I am so angry and heartbroken.
