It's common in the hair industry for stylists to leave due to work related injuries and/or chronic body pain. I've been off work due to developing carpel tunnel, and forearm tendonitis.
I've poured my heart and soul into my career, and the income I earn does not reflect my efforts. I was making commission, which is unstable. I live in the most expensive city in Canada. My Income grew over the years, but not fast enough with inflation.
I've thought about it long and hard. It's time to change my career.
I have tons of transferable skills, and have worked several different jobs over the last 15 years. Mainly in the food industry (I won't go back) and customer service before I became a hairstylist.
I was considering Harm Reduction as an option. I am aware this line of work is challenging in its own right. I've been sober for the last 7 years, and felt a calling. Most places would take lived experience over education.
I was also considering the tech industry. Specifically product management. I have done hundreds of hair consultations, am extremely personable and have good interpersonal skills, and I had the top retails sales record within my salon. For these reasons, I think I could be the right fit for this role. I don't have tech experience, but am eager to learn. I've been applying, and the market is very competitive right now.
Since I lack experience and education in these different positions, my applications have been overlooked. I would love to go to school, but due to an old student loan, won't be approved for a new one.
I'm hoping the appeal to my Workers Compensation claim will be approved. I may be entitled to receiving funding to be retrained in a new career.
I was wondering if any retired hairstylists could lend me advice, or share your experience with leaving the industry.
I would also appreciate advice from people working in Harm reduction and the tech industry, or anyone that has useful suggestions specific to my situation.
TYIA.
