Paying deposit vs reservation fee

Hello, sorry if this is a dumb question but I was wondering what the best way to reserve a car is? Do you pay a deposit for say 10% of the value and then pay the remaining 90% when you come to collect it or is it safer to pay a separate reservation fee?
