Car AC is as indecisive as me

Sometimes, the ac will blow actual cold air. Sometimes, it blows hair that’s hotter than outside. Literally, if I rolled down the window, the breeze is cooler than the AC, and it’s normally 103 outside.
So my question is: do I need to take it into the shop or is it something that I can do myself. I’d hate to pay $45 to get it looked at at when I can just spend a few bucks to get it fixed.
