Does CarPlay have the capabilities to work with a non-touch interface (e.g.: a spinning dial like in BMWs or Mazdas?)

Just curious if any cars with a spinning dial (like BMW's iDrive or Mazda's system) have incorporated CarPlay into it. I'm really hoping the Mazda3 gets CarPlay soon but it got me wondering if it would even fully work.
