Full names again

After an update several months ago to my iPhone, CarPlay began announcing texts by the first name of the person who sent the message, regardless if the person shared a name with another person in my contacts. This was great because I don’t need every full name announced every time.
However, today, it began announcing names again in full. I hate it! Is this a setting I can change?
