Gentlemen,
The guys over on /r/vintageaudio recommended this sub to me for a project I'd like to start. I recently purchased a '64 230SL that wasn't optioned with any audio originally. The original owner appears to have put some kind of radio in it in the 90s that no longer functions. Originally, since these have a pretty small hole for a radio, something like a Blaupunkt Frankfurt, Becker Grand Prix TG (tube), or Becker Europa TG (semi-tube). The dash may or may not have been cut to accommodate the 90s-early 00s unit anyway. The current radio is an Eclipse 54400.
I'm interested in something that looks in-keeping with the car but sounds better. The original owner also cut two holes in the parcel shelf for speakers as well as in the footwells. Typical 90s black plastic, definitely doesn't look so good, and I am a bit concerned about how the speakers protrude on the parcel shelf because I fully intend to store stuff there if I can.
I'm aware of a company called Aurora that reconfigures the internals of old Becker radios, has anyone here ever worked with them? Or knows of any other solutions? I'm totally willing to modify things and be creative here.
