"Selfish" Libertarians
Post Body

It's old meme that libertarians are guilty of the high crime, the sheer avarice, the unfathomable greed of wanting everyone to live their lives freely, but I'd just like to say that does not necessarily make one selfish.

Not all libertarians are egoists, nor are all anarchists, nor even are all adverse to social safety nets. In fact there once was a time when some of us were described as "liberals" and we wrote landmark economic treatises in which we espoused our proposals for curing poverty and helping the disadvantaged such as the elderly, infirmed, or disabled. What libertarian here would not breathe easier to see help arrive in the wake of an unexpected flood or earthquake?

We're not all long-sighted, but many of us are reproachful towards the accusation of being "selfish" when we share the same concerns and have merely dared to suggest a different solution. Namely one we can comfortably prescribe without ethical misgivings. I think that's important, but what do I know? I only care about muh fat stacks of munny.

I live in borderline poverty by the way, and losing my job to outsourcing in May.
