Is crate important for a 5 year old puppy ?

I have a 5 months old Cane Corso puppy and so far he sleeps in my floor and couch which is his favourite place to sleep and lie down/relax. I have a crate from my previous Border collie but it’s small for him I feel. So far he is doing good inside the house when I go out and leave him alone for couple of hours. Although I saw my shoes, t shirt and shoes brush here and there on the floor but he did not destroy anything inside my house He doesn’t bark, pee or poop in the house he is potty trained Please advise if it’s important to buy him a Crate ?
