How to make homemade hard candy taste better?

I used to buy lifesavers hard candy cherry in bulk, but the local stores stopped selling it so I decided to make my own since that's the only flavor I like and to buy it online is 5 times more expensive, but the hard candy I made (using lorann cherry flavor) tastes like a cough drop without the menthol. It's awful. I know there's tons of extra ingredients in lifesavers but how can I, at home, make cherry hard candy that doesn't taste like a cough drop? Google has been no help.
