I go to work, interacting with my coworkers, none of them knowing the real person I am inside. I am together with them, but alone.
You tend to your social obligations. Happy hour drinks, work lunches, jokes told, laughs had, but the inside remains closed off to the people around you. Together with others, but alone.
Then the unexpected. A song on the radio while driving home that we had listened to together. We are alone, but together.
I arrive home, a place of so many obligations. Supper is made with a spouse that I no longer know. Together, but so very much alone.
You go through the motions at home. Cleaning up supper, getting kids to bed, lunches packed, all with a stranger that could never understand what is inside. Together, but alone.
Then in the barren space left between work and bed, a notification on your phone. We both smile. Alone, but together for a special moment.
Then its on to kids activities. Dance, sports, all the things I want want my children to experience and excell in. Sure, there are other parents, pleasantries exchanged while we watch, but none of them know my thoughts or feelings. Together with others, but alone.
You are tending to grocery shopping. Endless aisles filled with endless people. Some you know, most you dont. You chat with the butcher, the baker, finally the cashier, but none make it past the internal wall. Together and alone at the same time.
Then the unexpected. An unplanned hour for us to meet. The walls can come down. The space we reserve for ourselves can include another. The facade we present the world can finally come down and we can be truely understood, desired, loved. The fires, so long forcibly dimmed, can now be stoked. The inviting warmth spreads. Touch becomes electric.
We smile.
We are alone. We are together.
