Hey everyone,
I know (source: friends and family) that in some private sector jobs, it's "badly seen" to officially join the union. Obviously management can never unambiguously punish you for it but it might be harder to get promotions or executive positions, for instance.
What about the public service? Those ServicePlus goodies are quite enticing and we have to pay the fees anyway, but I do plan on getting an EX position someday if I can. Plus the whole tendency for unions to have controversial positions (I strongly disagree with CUPE's recent statement on Venezuela, for instance, and I don't think it's the business of a union to get involved in international politics).
(E: I'm not specifying my union, my question is more about joining unions in general, not a specific one)
