I'm planning on taking my 2 son's (19 & 17) hiking for the first time. We've done some light hiking, but nothing beyond nature trails really. I'm a reasonably accomplished trail runner though and have done some out and backs that have lasted up to 8 hours.
My sons need footwear beyond the sneakers they've used in the past, but seeing as this is their first time and I don't want to break the bank, I'm leaning towards trail runners. I've only used trail runners and never had a problem. When I hike, I try to follow the ultralight method, which is easy since I've yet to do any overnight camping. I am thinking about getting myself a new pair for this trip though and was considering the Altra Lone Peak mid mesh. I'm wondering if getting the waterproof version would be worth it for that time of year and area we're going to. None of my trail runners are, but I do all my trail running between April and November, and if I do happen to get wet feet, the shoes drain quickly. I'm considering just getting the non-waterproof version and just getting some waterproof socks.
Would you consider trekking poles a necessity for the terrain? And lastly, we're thinking about just getting an Airbnb in Marquette for the stay. Is there any other cities you'd recommend or even other hikes to do besides the area we're going to?
