Hey! Appreciate any thoughts/input especially from people who have started their camera collection over again/switched systems.
So I currently own an A7sII but it's edging ever closer to being a decade old. I enjoy the photos and video I get from it, but I also know that in the 8 years since its release, it's gone from being one of the most capable cameras on the market to one of the least (well, technically it's no longer on the market but anyway).
I'm a true hybrid shooter - I care as much about photo performance as video, and while 12MP isn't a dealbreaker, it would be nice to up that a bit. Plus my video is limited to 8-bit 4:2:0 (at least I can get 4K out of it).
I started my photography journey with Canon, but I attended a Sony event where they were doing an exclusive, really good deal on the original A7s. On a whim, I figured 'why not' and bought the thing. Then went through the process of selling all my Canon gear and investing into the Sony ecosystem. I felt a bit blindsided less than a year later when the A7sII came out, but I quickly sold my A7s and got the new camera.
It seems Sony cameras just keep getting more expensive; I didn't buy the A7sIII because it was the middle of COVID and I wasn't working anyway and the price put me off. Of course now that camera is edging into fourth year (and some of its user base is endlessly complaining about the lack of firmware upgrades).
I'm tempted to pack it all up, trade in all my Sony gear and invest in the new Lumix S5IIx. With some of the deals floating around, I could probably come out of the swap with a decent investment in native L lenses and have it cost me <$2k which is less than it would cost me to upgrade to the A7sIII right this second.
But... I'm concerned about a few things. One is that I wouldn't really be upgrading my AF abilities, and that seems annoying because whilst the A7sII's AF is fine, it's also not the greatest in the world, and so I would find it pretty annoying to have similar AF performance if I then keep this next camera for the better part of a decade too. Secondly, I see/hear about average moire on the S5II line... which I really don't want. Again, this is one of those things that in another 5-8 years I will be really not very happy about. Third, the sensor crop in video mode on the S5IIx is kinda wild and random to me. Lastly, I feel like knowing my luck I'm going to trade-in all my Sony gear, swap to Panasonic and in 6 months time, Sony will announce an A7sIV that will be exactly what I want and not have any of the AF/moire/cropping issues that I have with the S5IIx. Meanwhile I will have just completely divested from Sony gear. Then again, an A7sIV is just as likely to cost $4k which is... well ridiculous given that you can get an S5IIx for $2200.
So... any advice for making the decision to switch... or not? I'm in no real hurry to swap over, but I'm not really inspired to use my camera these days which is very different to when I first got it (I do use my phone a lot now to take photos because the phone pictures are so damn good and you don't need to take a bulky camera with you... but it's a different kind of 'photography' really).
Video AF is handy but not a dealbreaker for me, but decent photo AF is important (there have been more than a few times when my A7sII has focussed on anything but eyes that I haven't realised until later on which has been extremely annoying).
Edit: Oh, one more thing that is worthy of consideration - occasionally I would be shooting on cinema cameras so the idea of being able to use my own glass natively on a Sony FX3/6/9 is tempting. I don't, however, want to buy a camera for stills and one for video (which I considered with say an A7IV FX3)
