Can Calibre strip DRM from Kobo and B&N books, and do you need a Kobo or Nook device to do it if so?

Post Body

I'm trying to move away from the Amazon marketplace. I own a Boox Nova 2 and an Amazon Paperwhite 4. Do all my reading on the Boox these days and use Calibre with the Apprentice Alf De-DRM plugin to strip DRM to read my stuff on the Boox.

Is this possible with books from Kobo, B&N, and other ebook outlets? I'd like to stop buying books from Amazon wherever possible, mostly due to a dislike of their business practices, but I'm not sure if I can get out and still remove DRM and "own" my books. I don't want to have to read on a bunch of different distributors' apps, just use my own preferred ones.
