Do gangs really lose their turf because of other gangs?

Just curious if this is an actual factor? I've heard gentrification, gang injunctions, changes in laws have affected several neighborhoods so I could see this being a huge factor in original neighborhoods losing turf and members. But I can't really imagine neighborhoods completely taking over their rivals unless some hoods are smaller in manpower.
