Foreign visitor using Canadians car covered by insurance?

Hi all,I'm a Danish national visiting Alberta and will need to use my wife's uncles car once in a while (3-4 times max) and was under the impression that I would be covered by his insurance since i have a valid international license. However the insurance broker tells us that as an international driver i am a high risk and his insurance doesn't cover high risk.
I have never heard of this can anyone confirm whether this high risk category exists, I have a feeling that the broker is just lazy :)
