With the support of Professor Lam in the CivilE department, I'm starting up a repair cafe at the Maker Space on the second floor of the library, and I'm looking for snappy, memorable (memeable?) names to help advertise it.
For those who don't know what a repair cafe is: It's basically a 'show up and learn to fix your stuff' kind of event where people hang out and fix stuff. I'm mostly experienced in electronics repair (and at repair cafes I mostly fixed laptops and cell phone screens), but I've done other things at these events, like bicycles, vacuum cleaners, and so on. I am happy to train people to help keep this running and in a 'sunshine and puppy dogs' scenario, I'd love to have volunteers able to man the station all week long, instead of one day a week. I've been fixing up stuff like that for the past decade and change, and I'd be happy to pass along everything I've learned.
I'm also happy for people to come on down and help out with their skills. As an example, I had a student who helped a lot with OS crashes and hard drive recovery, since I'm not that great at them.
The only hard rule I have is "no money changes hands, ever" I'll fix stuff for free, but if you need parts, that's on the person with the phone/laptop/whatever. If you want to learn how to fix electronics and start up your own side hustle, by all means, do so, but don't charge at the repair cafe.
