“Special study” classes?

Before downvoting, I have an appointment with my advisor already, but it’s only 15 minutes and like a month out
I’ve been wondering about the special study classes I see in nearly every major. There’s always a lower division and upper division. What are these for? Does anyone have any experience with these?
