When am I supposed to apply for graduation?

I’m hearing that the deadline to apply was Oct 7th (today) but my advisor told me to apply during the spring because I’m going to have 6 units left after Spring semester. I’m a little confused because since I’ll have 6 units left after spring do I apply now if I’m eligible to walk in May?
