Using multiple ethernet-connected devices

I'm in the red bricks and have been using the W ethernet port for the first portion of the year with my PC. We now have a second device in the dorm that also requires hardwired internet. We tried using an ethernet switch, but it does not work and the Cal Poly ethernet page says they are not allowed. Can the X port be enabled to also work or is there any other solution I can use to get both devices connected?
