Better to rent or dorm?

Iām transferring from socal to cuny in the fall (not sure which school in particular yet) and am wondering which option is better. Is it cheaper to rent vs dorm especially considering pandemic prices? Also would it be more difficult to meet people considering Iād be living off campus? Any advice helps thanks!
