I would like to invite you to join in on a new club coming to campus next semester. We are looking for people to fill some key officer positions before we can make this official so sign up, join the discord, and let us know what role you would like to take on.
I have been working with this organization called Rewildyourcampus in planning how CSULB could begin transitioning away from using synthetic chemicals in landscaping. Formerly known as Herbicide Free Campus, they have started the movement to help college campuses transition to organic landscape management and have found it benefits not only the environment but the entire college as well. Here is a study explaining the cost and benefits of their campaigns so far: โThe State of Ecological Campus Land Management Across The U.S.โ . Now they have partnered with the international organization Re:Wild to expand their efforts to even more colleges.
The purpose of Re:Wild CSULB is to help the campus implement new sustainable land management strategies that move away from the traditional use of synthetic chemicals and incorporate more native plants into the campus landscape. The use of pesticides harm our local ecosystems by killing native pollinators, and because oil is used to make pesticides, theyโre another financial avenue for the fossil fuel industry and further increases GHG emissions. There are many benefits to having native plants โ they require less water, attract native pollinators, and over time require less maintenance. Going organic also comes with the cultural benefits of involving students and faculty working with the landscape and being able to feel more connected with their campus.
If we keep using synthetic chemicals we miss out not only on the opportunity for our campuses sustainability efforts to be recognized on a national potentially international level, but also the environmental, economic, and cultural benefits.
