Thermal Runaway / Heated Bed Repair
Post Body

Recently my printer (specifically a CR-10S) has started throwing thermal runaway errors within 10 minutes of starting a new print. I've been able to figure out it's specifically the bed causing this problem by observing the following

  • During printing the temperature of the extruder would remain consistent, the temperature of the bed would jump from recorded 30 to 55, not necessarily all at once, those were the highs and the lows I saw within the short time my printer was trying to print
  • after the error happened, I turned of and turned my printer back on. The temperature recorded for my bed was reading at 65, and felt much hotter than it should have.
  • After reading a bunch of posts to try and figure out what to do, I went through and moved my bed back and forth manually, and was able to witness some temperature jumps. It had been cooling down, so seeing the recorded temperature jump from 28 back up to 36 was surprising.

Now honestly I'm really nervous about having to do any repairs involving wiring or any heating elements - I usually do quite long prints and the idea of something going wrong and setting something on fire terrifies me. The cables connected to the bed are all enclosed, so I'm not sure if anything in there is damaged. I saw that someone mentioned checking under the bed for some yellow tape, but I think they may have been talking about a different model of CR10, as I didn't see anything like that on mine.

It seems apparent that the bed is able to heat, but the control box isn't able to keep a handle on reading the temperature accurately, and is overcompensating, and finally shutting down because it finally notices that it's 10 degrees over what the temperature is supposed to be. What sort of fix am I looking at here, and is it something someone who doesn't really have experience with electronics can handle?
