The superintendent of my children’s school district sent out a letter to parents today regarding COVID-19 cases amongst students. Some of the things he said concern me and I’m just not sure what to make of them as I feel some of his statements seem to be conflicting. Below are the excerpts from his letter that concerned me or that I found conflicting.
“. . . [w]e are seeing more cases among our students than we did last year. Fortunately, because all of our students are wearing masks in schools, we are not seeing a high rate of spread in the classroom.
. . . While your child may not be quarantined when there is a positive case in their classroom, you should be aware that there are likely positive cases in your child’s school. Please check your child every day for symptoms . . .
. . . As I told you at the start of the school year, our goal is to keep students in school as many days as possible this year . . .”
My youngest son currently has an upper respiratory infection but tested negative for COVID. My oldest son contracted Hand Foot & Mouth Disease last week, most likely from another child at school (he is well now).
While I’m thankful there’s a mask mandate in our district, I’m still concerned that my children are most likely attending school with other children who have COVID-19 and might contract it, especially since they aren’t eligible to receive the vaccine. Am I worrying too much or is my anxiety justified?
