Please see the updated scope changes on the new mod post here
Greetings users,
So, as you can see there is now a new r/COVID19. /r/COVID19science will serve as the science sub, in that it will operate exactly as the old one has operated with respect to rules and what we will allow there.
/r/COVID19 will change scope and now be more news-focused, akin to what /r/Coronavirus is.
You may be asking - why the change?
Well, as most of you are aware there was some Reddit drama with respect to a certain admin who has now been fired. The active mods at r/coronavirus voted to turn the sub private in protest of the hiring (as did many other large subs). The inactive top mod disagreed HOURS after the vote/decision was made, reversed this unanimous decision, and said that any mod who disagreed could resign or be removed. No more than 3 hours later u/spez posted about the firing of that particular employee due to public backlash, and the sub was made public again after five total hours of being down.
However, the damage was done. The top mod believed the sub to be a dictatorship, with him at the top, as opposed to the democracy the rest of us believed it to be. He removed the mods who helped shape the sub to where it is now, and who have actual virology/biology backgrounds and decided to install unrelated powermods.
So, we have decided to take all the good things we did for r/coronavirus (the vaccine finder, science study post, AMAs, verified users, etc.) and bring them to /r/COVID19!
We know it can be annoying, and we aren't happy about this either, but I hope to see all of our regular users here migrate to /r/COVID19science to continue what we have built here in r/COVID19. Just please be patient as things don't happen overnight, so the changes in the sub and differences between us and r/coronaviurs will be more obvious as the time rolls on!
If you have any questions, please feel free to message the moderators
This change will take effect tomorrow, March 30th, 2021 at 6am EST
EDIT: Because I've been asked a lot why we didn't just create a new r/coronavirus and leave this alone. Well, this sub already has a large following, has a name that is closely associated with the coronavirus (COVID19), has many of the same mods (who were removed) and has similar (but more stringent) rulesets. It just makes the transition easier, and we know it can be annoying, we aren't happy about it either, but we promise to do our best to ensure a smooth transition!
EDIT2: If you got banned from this sub previously but are NOT banned from r/coronavirus, please modmail us and we will undo the ban in this sub
EDIT3: We will be a bit more strict than the original r/coronavirus on political stuff though, that will be the main change, otherwise basically the same rules/feel as the original r/coronavirus
EDIT4: I know some are not happy, please use modmail to voice your concerns, not the daily discussion threads. Thank you.
