I have a leaking boot on the drivers-side. This was brought to my attention earlier this year when I had an engine repair. There are no clicking sounds when driving or turning, which leads me to believe that the axle itself may be salvagable. I'm thinking about attempting to repair myself. Local garages want close to $1,000 to replace. My questions are:
1) Is this something I can accomplish on my own in my garage with basic hand tools and loaner tools from Auto Zone, or would this be something I should pay a mechanic to do? I've relaced the starter, serpentine belt, do the oil changes and have changed the radiator hoses and ATF fluid, so I do have some car repair skills.
2) If so, should I order the boot repair kit from Toyota or replace the whole axle? I don't know if there is any rust or damage done to the axle until I remove the axle.
3) I know the answer already to this, but asking anyway. If I do replace the entire axle should I go with OEM parts or after-market? I'm guessing there are better places to order the axle than directly from Toyota but not sure of the best websites.
Thanks in advance.
