The jumper went on first, drinking a healthy amount of water and eating half an energy bar next. The bathroom at the lookout was open and had toilet paper, she collected as much as she could and started heading down the road towards the highway.

It took about twenty minutes to drive out there, and she would pass houses when she was getting close. If she didn't have the road, she would have camped near the lookout and continued the next morning, but the sun was almost gone and the path was clear. Experience also told her it was too windy to sleep there too.

Making it as far as she could before the sun set was the best option she had. Her instructions were clear, no one was coming for her. Pulling the straps of the backpack tight, she started to run. Pacing and pushing herself, she tried to cover as many stretches of the road as she could; darkness creeping in and blinding her. There were no lights, nothing to guide her path except the hidden moon. Stopping to compose herself, she sat and ate the rest of the first energy bar.

“This is fucking cruel, Oliver! I never said this was okay!” She opened up the second bar, “I know you’re watching,” took one bite and put it back in the bag. Drinking just enough to wash it down, she found the edge of the path and started walking. Frustrated, she decided to rest and think of a better plan. She wouldn’t be able to sleep, but it was too dark to continue. Head in her hands, she started to cry.

Watching through his night vision goggles, Oliver laughed without remorse, “I said walk.” Swinging his bow around, he lit an arrow and shot it at her feet; the flame singeing the ends of her shoes. “Seriously?!” She started to get mad, freezing suddenly and laughing. “Dumb arse!!” Picking up the flaming arrow, she began running down the path. The flame gave her a small amount of light and she knew the kerosene would stay lit long enough for her to make some distance.

His thoughts raced as the hunt began. He was stronger, smarter, faster and better equipped than she was. She stood no chance...
