UnexpectedHippo visited Oshawa Car Assembly this morning, home to the oldest General Motors Canada assembly plant in the country. Mr. Hippo, who is the candidate for the Durham-Peterborough seat, was given a guided tour of the plant by employees. Afterwards he gave a speech to employees and gathered press.

“Good morning everyone! It’s great to see so many hardworking men and women out there.”

“You are all members of a very successful business, General Motors Canada. But you know it’s much more than a business. You know that it’s a community, a family. That’s why you voted this plant one of the best places to work in the whole country back in August. That’s why this assembly line has kept producing some of North America’s best loved vehicles, from the Chevrolet Bel Air to the 2010 Chevy Camaro. General Motors has made it work for decades.

“But GM knows the importance of strong trade and strong markets. GM knows the importance of sound fiscal policy. I’m sure there will be many of you here today who remember the dark days of 2008, when the financial crash threatened GM Canada’s very existence. The Conservative Party wasn’t afraid to help business out then, and it isn’t afraid to do so now.

“Through hard work and sound decisions, GM has made it work post-crash. We want to help businesses who invest in Canada so that other people can be as fortunate as you in getting a job at such an employee-friendly plant. We want to help businesses thrive across Canada. That’s why the Conservatives have lowered corporation tax by three percent whilst in Government. That’s why we are committed to opposing unnecessary red tape on businesses. That’s why we are committed to a balanced budget.

“But we are not stopping there. We must broaden our horizons. The Conservatives are committed to CANZUK, a ground-breaking free trade and enterprise deal with Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. Post-Brexit, we will be at the front of the queue, and we can use this time to negotiate with our Conservative friends across the Atlantic now. A free trade agreement of this nature would be hugely beneficial. It would allow companies like this one to trade in new markets, to access new trade routes, and ultimately to grow on the world stage.

“The only way we can guarantee a strong future for this country is by voting Conservative. The only way you can guarantee people the same opportunities you have is by voting Conservative. Thank you all very much!”

UnexpectedHippo then spent half an hour meeting the workers of the factory before leaving with his aides.
