Soldiers getting parole rather than imprisonment
Post Body

I was watching the grant series and it talked about the confederate garrison at Vicksburg getting parole, and not being taken prisoner. It seemed to insinuate that these confederate soldiers were allowed to go straight home and the war was over for them after the siege. What were the advantages for the Union army to give parole to large quantities of surrendered confederates? What stops these confederates from just recycling right back into a confederate army once they go home? I know the desertion rate for confederates by the time the Vicksburg campaign came along is probably pretty high and most of them probrably wanted to be done with the war, but it still seems risky to let a large fighting force just “go home”
