It was one of those nights I was spending looking at Civil War maps when the town of Rockville, Maryland caught my eye. Stuart had crossed the Potomac at Rowser's Ford and headed east for reasons Civil War buffs love to argue about. Anyway, he ended up in the town of Rockville.
They were a town of about 400 at the time and have commemorations for their small part in the conflict.
I was curious as to what transpired there when he arrived and was surprised at what the town had to say. Apparently he was welcomed. But what's more... especially by the ladies.
The Peerless Rockville is their historical society. According to their website: "The Confederates took so long to capture a Union wagon train and to be charmed by local girls that they arrived late to the Battle of Gettysburg." Also, "becharmed the young ladies of a female academy in Rockville." https://peerlessrockville.org/2013/05/31/the-civil-war-comes-to-rockville/
That's from a lecture given in the town lol Nevermind that he arrived there on June 28 and rode through most of Maryland the next day for the Battle of Hanover on the 30th.
Regardless, it's kinda funny how the town has its own take on why Stuart was late.
