ELI5: Why was Fitz John Porter ever court martialed in the first place for the Second Battle of Bull Run?
Post Body

In this map it's clear that Reynolds disengaged his forces at which time Pope should have realized he was cornered by Jackson and Longstreet and retreated. Porter couldn't attack Jackson and expect Longstreet to halt his attack simultaneously.

I had to read the Wikipedia page a couple of times because I was confused by Pope's reaction, in lay terms what the heck was Porter expected to do? There was a commission that found McDowell and Pope to blame eventually after the war but shouldn't have been obvious from the outset that Union forced were flanked?
