We're currently in that really exciting time between the Start of Camp and the First Game. Beat writers are churning out all kinds of material in order to satiate our growing need for college football information. My favorite preseason story is the obligatory "Puff Piece" which usually centers around a particular unit on the team that was horrible in the previous year. These Puff Pieces revolve around either a new activity and/or a new coach that will 100% absolutely lead to the particular unit improving and dominating in the upcoming year. Almost without fail these reports turn out to be hot air. But they can be really fun/sad to read in hindsight.
Florida Examples:
Summer 2011: Charlie Weis, Film Study, and John Brantley
Changes plenty for John Brantley
The key to the offense? Brantley said it’s all in the preparation. He spends plenty of time watching film with Weis, so much so that he’s gotten to a point that he’s quite often recognizing the same things that Weis sees, a sign that they’re on the same page.
Result: Brantley averaged 185 passing yards per game over Weiss' only season with the Gators.
Summer 2017: Brad Davis, High Energy, and the Gator's Offensive Line
New energy in the Florida Gators offensive line room
After several years of the offense being a weakness many believe that the Gators have the experiences and pieces to put things together. The Florida offensive line is a big factor in all of the positive expectations
Result: The offensive line allowed 37 sacks in 2017, ranking 114th nationally in adjusted sack rate.
