Did McElwain exaggerate claims of getting death threats?
Comments

I don't understand how people think this isn't a big deal, at least for Florida Football. A head coach just made national headlines talking about how the coaches, their families, and players received death threats. The UAA then went out of their way to cast doubt on these accusations made by a sitting coach.

There is no justification for this on Mac's part. If this were simply an offhand comment about social media or something that he thinks isn't a big deal or worth following up on, he turned it into a big deal by making a news story dragging the University's name and fan base through the mud.

If this is an actual issue and he feels threatened, there is no reason that the police or administration should find out about this through a press conference. There is even less reason that he should refuse to follow-up with the administration.

The only way I can concoct this not being a monumental fuck up by him purposefully or accidentally damaging the Florida brand is if he is actively being blackmailed, and that's too far down the conspiracy rabbit hole to consider. This screams either incompetence or negligence, and it seems the Athletic Department is calling bullshit. If this was a plea for sympathy, which I think it was, boy did he fuck it up.
