Miss St. has the second coming of Collin Klein in Nick Fitzgerald (sophomore last season). I could make the lazy comparison and say "Fitzgerald is the next Dak Prescott" (most media types will say this because he's the QB taking over Dak's place), but Fitz is very different from Dak. He's not the same type of locker-room presence Dak was -- Fitz is a much better runner, and he's physically more daunting than Dak. I don't think Fitzgerald will be close to the type of NFL player Dak is, but Fitz could end up being a better college player.
With that being said, I think a more apt comparison is Collin Klein. I really liked Klein at Kstate, and I couldn't help to see the similarities between he and Nick Fitzgerald when Fitz broke out this past season. I was actually hoping Klein could be Miss St's QB coach going into next season since both guys play(ed) incredibly similarly:
- Both are around 6'5" 230
- Former WRs (Klein his redshirt and freshmen year, Fitz was a WR in HS)
- Both are explosive runners (Fitz was 2nd in rush yards in the SEC in 2016, Klein had two seasons w/ 900 rush yards). Just watch their highlights, you'll see what I mean (klein) (fitz)
- Both can be power runners as well. Collin Klein was a monster in the red zone (had two seasons of 23 rushing TDs) and Fitz led the SEC in rush TDs
I think Fitz may end up a being a more polished passer (Fitz stats) over Klein when it's all said and done, but Klein had some fantastic seasons (Klein stats) winning a lot of games, and I'm hoping Fitz can carry MSU to at least one 10 win year.
I don't know if Fitz will receive the same type of Heisman recognition that Klein did at K-State, but I think Dak playing well in the NFL has helped the notoriety of Dan Mullen as a QB whisperer (having coached Alex Smith at Utah, Tim Tebow at Florida, Dak Prescott at Miss St, and now Nick Fitzgerald), so Fitz may get more publicity even though Miss St isn't a big name school.
edit: also, they both wear #7
edit 2: also, to the KState community -- I wish Bill Snyder well, that guy's a legend
This comparison never even crossed my mind, but I really like it.
