TABLE | Dark Mode | Colorblind-Friendly | Black And White
Sorry this is a day late. I didn't have time to finish on Sunday night, so I had to generate the graphics on Monday morning and make this write up after work.
HOW TO READ THIS TABLE
Teams are ranked in their order from the Logo (note for mobile users: everywhere you see a "Logo" link, that means that inline flair is shown on old.reddit.com/r/cfb) AP Poll for Week 8. The column to the right of the team name shows the number of points that team received using the AP Poll's Borda count rules. New for the 2023 season, the following two columns show information about each team's previous and upcoming games. The following columns show how many votes for each ranking the team received. The 'U' column shows how many voters left the team unranked (off their ballots entirely). Gridlines are placed every 5 rows and columns for ease of reading. A thick line is placed below the 25th-ranked team to distinguish "ranked" teams above it to "receiving votes" teams below it.
Some cells are shaded to highlight points of interest. The green diagonal highlights how many voters ranked a team exactly where they ended up in the overall poll. For example, Logo North Carolina is ranked 10th in this week's poll, and 19 voters placed the Tar Heels exactly in their 10th spot. Values for which a team received no votes at that rank are shaded in red, while placements chosen by only exactly one voter are highlighted in blue. The most common selection (the mode) for each team is shaded yellow. Finally, since there are very few votes that ever end up near the top-right or bottom-left of the chart, those cells are filled in with black diagonally as much as possible without covering up any nonzero values. This helps naturally guide the eye while viewing the chart and helps locate the most unusual votes. We lightheartedly call these the "Wilner" diagonals. Last season's practice of trolling the team whose rank matches the week number is not going to continue this year because I am a bad programmer and can't make it work again.
NOTES FOR THIS WEEK
The upper Wilner diagonal was set by Jon Wilner himself, along with Greg Madia. That pair left Logo Southern California unranked after their loss to Logo Notre Dame. Those choices are at least 8 spots below the Trojans' consensus rank in the poll. On the other side, the lower Wilner diagonal was set by any of the three unique last-place votes for Logo Miami FL (Emily Leiker), Logo Oklahoma State (Josh Furlong), and Logo West Virginia (Chuck Landon).
The team with the most votes matching their rank is Logo Georgia. 43 voters placed the Bulldogs in 1st place. On the other hand, the team with the fewest votes matching their rank is Logo Louisville, with only 7 voters ranking the Cardinals in their 21st spot. Altogether, 468 votes matched the team's rank in the poll. Moreover, 563 votes were off by ±1 rank, 270 were off by ±2 ranks, 129 were off by ±3 ranks, 45 were off by ±4 ranks, and 19 were off by ±5 ranks. The highest-ranked team to be left off a ballot is Logo Southern California, as 2 voters did not have the Trojans on their ballot. The lowest-ranked team to appear on all 63 ballots was Logo Missouri in 20th. Logo Air Force came extremely close to running the table, with only Tony Garcia choosing not to rank the Falcons. The two closest teams were Logo Iowa and Logo UCLA, with only 3 points keeping the Hawkeyes over the Bruins. Conversely, a whopping 155 points separate Logo Penn State and Logo Texas, more than any other teams only one rank apart. The top 7 is almost unanimous, with only three votes in that range going to teams outside the Top 7 in the poll. Logo Texas (Tom D'Angelo), Logo Oregon (Jon Wilner), and Logo North Carolina (Mike Niziolek) each received one vote each for 7th place.
This week, teams in the receiving-votes section received just 65 votes (4.1%) for a total of just 152 points (0.7%). The receiving-votes section continues to grow sparser as the season goes on. Logo Clemson received the highest vote of any team in that area, with Mike Berardino ranking the Tigers in their 20th slot. 223 distinct team-rank combinations occurred in votes this week, of which 56 were unique. The most common vote was placing Logo Georgia 1st, cast by 43 voters (68%). The team with the lowest variation in votes was Logo Texas with a standard deviation of 0.777. This is the first time this season that Logo Georgia has not had the lowest standard deviation. On the other hand, nobody could agree on where to put Logo Louisville. The Cardinals had the largest standard deviation of 3.12. This week, no teams received their first votes of the season. 66 different teams have received at least one vote in at least one week this season. However, 4 teams received a vote this week after receiving none last week, but getting some in earlier weeks. Welcome back to Logo Oklahoma State, Logo Florida, Logo Fresno State, and Logo Liberty! Unfortunately, the following 3 teams did not receive any votes this week after getting at least one last week. Depending on your rooting interests, better luck next week or good riddance to Logo Wisconsin, Logo Texas A&M, and Logo Maryland.
TEAM PROGRESSION WEEK BY WEEK
Now available in regular or dark mode! Some of the bugs have been cleaned up, but please let me know if you find any more. Each team that has received a vote in any week is included, even if they have since fallen out of the receiving-votes section entirely.
We're far enough into the season for these to be interesting now. Notice how Logo Duke is currently ranked 16th with 593 points. But in Week 5, they were ranked one spot lower, despite having 648 points! So you can see a soft trend down in the voters' average opinion of the Blue Devils despite their slow movement upward in the polls. Logo Oklahoma slipped one spot to 6th despite literally only losing one point in total. In Week 4, Logo Iowa was ranked 24th with 125 points and promptly lost 31-0 to a Logo Big Ten opponent on network TV. This week, the Hawkeyes are ranked 24th with 125 points and are set to play a Logo Big Ten opponent on network TV...
BALLOT CHANGES BY VOTER
Now you can quickly compare how each voter's ballot changed this week and since the start of the season! Like the team progression tables, this is a bit wonky, but something is better than nothing. Please let me know what you think and give me any feedback or bug reports you notice.
Also, this made me realize how many repeat and near-repeat names the voters have this year. There are two Adams and a Ms. Adams; two Brians; a Creg and a Greg; two Daves and two Davids; two Emilies; a Jon, two Johns, a Johnny, and two Mr. Johnsons; two Jordans; two Kirks; a Ron and a Don; two Ryans; two Scotts; a Steve, Steven, Stefan, Stephen, and a Mr. Stephenson; two Toms; two Mr. Williams; a Mr. Murphy and a Mr. McMurphy; a Robert and a Bob; three Matts; four Mikes, a Michael, and a partridge in a pear tree.
** NEXT PROJECT - TEAM SPECIFIC BALLOT CHANGES**
Similar to the section above, this will look at changes in ballots from one week to the next. However, instead of comparing each team for each voter, these tables will consider one team and each row will show how each voter moved them compared to the previous week. This is a rough "it doesn't even work yet" concept, so please provide any ideas you may have about what would be cool to see in it. Should I sort the table by the previous week's ranks, the new ranks, or the change in rank?

PAST WEEKS
Here are some handy links to previous weeks' posts:
SPECIAL THANKS
I would like to thank u/bakonydraco for providing the data set that makes this post possible. If you like this table, then you will also like his weekly voter-by-voter ballot breakdown. That post is also great for answering your "Who ranked [team] at [place]?" questions. You can find this week's version here.
I would also like to thank u/BlueSCar, who runs the College Football Data API, which I used to get the game and TV information.
REQUEST FOR FEEDBACK
As always, I am interested in any feedback or suggestions you may have. Ways to improve readability or aesthetics, new ways to analyze the data, or anything else. I have some ideas of my own, but if past seasons are any indication, I probably won't get to them before the season's end. Also, I significantly rewrote the code that generates this chart again this year, so please feel free to let me know about any bugs, typos, grammer errerrs, or general "is that a mistake or on purpose?" sorts of things. Also, if you would like to receive this chart DMed to you as soon as I finish it (usually late evening the night before it goes up on reddit, so not that amazing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), please send me a DM and mention which variety you want (e.g. dark mode) and I will DM it to you until you ask me to stop.
