The Distribution of Votes in the AP Poll (Week 3, 2023)
Post Body

TABLE | Dark Mode | Colorblind-Friendly | Black And White

HOW TO READ THIS TABLE

Teams are ranked in their order from the Logo (note for mobile users: everywhere you see a "Logo" link, that means that inline flair is shown on old.reddit.com/r/cfb) AP Poll for Week 3. The column to the right of the team name shows the number of points that team received using the AP Poll's Borda count rules. New for the 2023 season, the following two columns show information about each team's previous and upcoming games. The following columns show how many votes for each ranking the team received. The 'U' column shows how many voters left the team unranked (off their ballots entirely). Gridlines are placed every 5 rows and columns for ease of reading. A thick line is placed below the 25th-ranked team to distinguish "ranked" teams above it to "receiving votes" teams below it.

Some cells are shaded to highlight points of interest. The green diagonal highlights how many voters ranked a team exactly where they ended up in the overall poll. For example, Logo Alabama is ranked 10th in this week's poll, and 11 voters placed the Crimson Tide exactly in their 10th spot. Values for which a team received no votes at that rank are shaded in red, while placements chosen by only exactly one voter are highlighted in blue. The most common selection (the mode) for each team is shaded yellow. Finally, since there are very few votes that ever end up near the top-right or bottom-left of the chart, those cells are filled in with black diagonally as much as possible without covering up any nonzero values. This helps naturally guide the eye while viewing the chart and helps locate the most unusual votes. We lightheartedly call these the "Wilner" diagonals.

NOTES FOR THIS WEEK

The upper Wilner diagonal was set by Randy Johnson's vote for Logo LSU in 25th place. That selection is 11 spots below the Tigers' consensus rank in the poll. On the other side, the lower Wilner diagonal was set by the four one-point-wonders: Logo Wyoming (Rece Davis), Logo Maryland (Kirk Bohls), Logo James Madison (Johnny McGonigal), and Logo Oklahoma State (Kirk Kenney). The team with the most votes matching their rank is Logo Georgia. 55 voters placed the Bulldogs in 1st place. On the other hand, the team with the fewest votes matching their rank is Logo North Carolina, with only 3 voters ranking the Tar Heels in their 20th spot. Altogether, 401 votes matched the team's rank in the poll. Moreover, 446 votes were off by ±1 rank, 292 were off by ±2 ranks, 165 were off by ±3 ranks, 88 were off by ±4 ranks, and 41 were off by ±5 ranks. The highest-ranked team to be left off a ballot is Logo Miami, as 10 voters did not have the Hurricanes on their ballot. The lowest-ranked team to appear on all 62 ballots was Logo Duke in 21st. The two closest teams were Logo UCLA and Logo Iowa, with only 1 point keeping the Bruins over the Hawkeyes. Conversely, a whopping 191 points separate Logo Duke and Logo Miami, more than any other teams only one rank apart.

This week, teams in the receiving-votes section received 78 votes (5.0%) for a total of 206 points (1.0%). No team in that section was placed higher than 17th, where both Logo Arkansas and Logo TCU appeared. 278 distinct team-rank combinations occurred in votes this week, of which 73 were unique. The most common vote was placing Logo Georgia 1st, cast by 55 voters (89%). The team with the lowest variation in votes was Logo Georgia with a standard deviation of 0.486. On the other hand, nobody could agree on where to put Logo LSU. The Tigers had the largest standard deviation of 3.89. This week, 4 teams received their first votes of the season. Welcome to the 2023 AP Poll, Logo Kansas, Logo Cincinnati, Logo Maryland, and Logo Oklahoma State! That brings the total number of teams to receive at least one vote this season up to 61. Unfortunately, the following 12 teams did not receive any votes this week after getting at least one last week. Depending on your rooting interests, better luck next week or good riddance to Logo Troy, Logo Houston, Logo UCF, Logo Auburn, Logo Texas Tech, Logo Texas A&M, Logo Texas State, Logo NC State, Logo Pittsburgh, Logo Illinois, Logo Iowa State, and Logo Louisville.

TEAM PROGRESSION WEEK BY WEEK

Now available in regular or dark mode! Some of the bugs have been cleaned up, but please let me know if you find any more. Each team that has received a vote in any week is included, even if they have since fallen out of the receiving-votes section entirely.

BALLOT CHANGES BY VOTER

Now you can quickly compare how each voter's ballot changed this week and since the start of the season! Like the team progression tables, this is a bit wonky, but something is better than nothing. Please let me know what you think and give me any feedback or bug reports you notice.

Also, this made me realize how many repeat and near-repeat names the voters have this year. There are two Adams and a Ms. Adams; two Brians; a Creg and a Greg; two Daves and two Davids; two Emilies; a Jon, two Johns, a Johnny, and two Mr. Johnsons; two Jordans; two Kirks; a Ron and a Don; two Ryans; two Scotts; a Steve, Steven, Stefan, Stephen, and a Mr. Stephenson; two Toms; two Mr. Williams; a Mr. Murphy and a Mr. McMurphy; a Robert and a Bob; three Matts; four Mikes, and a Michael.

SPECIAL THANKS

I would like to thank u/bakonydraco for providing the data set that makes this post possible. If you like this table, then you will also like his weekly voter-by-voter ballot breakdown. That post is also great for answering your "Who ranked [team] at [place]?" questions. You can find this week's post here.

I would also like to thank u/BlueSCar, who maintains the College Football Data API, which I used to get the game and TV information.

REQUEST FOR FEEDBACK

As always, I am interested in any feedback or suggestions you may have. Ways to improve readability or aesthetics, new ways to analyze the data, or anything else. I have some ideas of my own, but if past seasons are any indication, I probably won't get to them before the season's end. Also, I significantly rewrote the code that generates this chart again this year, so please feel free to let me know about any bugs, typos, grammer errerrs, or general "is that a mistake or on purpose?" sorts of things. Also, if you would like to receive this chart DMed to you as soon as I finish it (usually late evening the night before it goes up on reddit, so not that amazing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯), please send me a DM and mention which variety you want (e.g. dark mode) and I will DM it to you until you ask me to stop.
