For the people in the process. If you are offered a PIE (Permanent Intermittent Employee) position, you need to know that if there are no available positions on a watch you are not guaranteed to work. With all the closures occurring and some prisons are up to staffing levels…some prisons will have extra officers on a watch or all watches. You are guaranteed to get your hours only if you are a full time employee.
Also being a PIE, you cannot bid for jobs. The PIEs that we have like being a PIE because they do two doubles and a single then off for four days. You don’t do OT as a PIE or do Swaps. You are at the discretion of the watch to be placed in a position.
This past Labor Day, we had 5 extras on 1W and 25 extra on 2W. 3W had little OT. I’ve seen it where we had extras all week on every watch a few months ago. So those PIEs didn’t get to work.
So be aware if you are offered a PIE position that you may not always get your 40 hours a week.
