Traveling abroad into "dangerous" countries

I have always wanted to go traveling to the middle east, other african regions, and through asia. There is objectively more crime in these regions than the US, but from my understanding it is not possible to just obtain a gun for example.
How does one adapt to these situations? Body guards? Does one get a gun and go with the ole "judged by twelve..."? Does anybody have experience with protection/ccw in more dangerous countries?
