Recommendations for first rifle

Hey everyone! I am interested in buying my first rifle for range shooting / home protection. However I don't have too much knowledge as to which brands are good. I was wondering if anyone here can guide me in a general direction. Of course my main interest is reliability, good for close / mid range and nothing to break the bank over.
