While I play guitar better than most people that's only because most people don't play guitar.
Most of the people that play play better than me and I'm acutely aware of it.
I'm campfire good. I've never had lessons. I have a Martin D1. I fingerpick very basically with my thumb, forefinger and middle finger. My Barre chords are chunky and unorthodox. I have pretty good strumming rhythm.
My wife is a terrific singer and she wants us to perform together. She doesn't want to just sing, she wants me to accompany her. She thinks I sound okay.
The thing is, I probably do sound okay in informal settings to most people who don't themselves play guitar. But I'm low key intimidated to actually perform where the point is presumably to showcase your ability. And the thought of an actually proficient guitarist smirking at my level at talent is off-putting.
I guess I'm looking for insights from folks who might have matched closely to my situation.
I remember once we went to see Jimbo Mathus play a local club. We hung out with him a little while a guy opened for him on guitar. Jimbo looked over his shoulder and said "damn this guy sucks". For some reason I always remember that when I consider accompanying my wife.

Great advice. I started incorporating the ring finger which is basically unlearning how I've been doing it for years so it sounds...well, it needs work but it's a start. I'll work on the alternate barre chords you provided. Thank you.
