So whatâs everyoneâs opinion on Storm/Ghillie/Kelly/Thermette kettles? They look fun but are they worth the weight?
And who do we actually think invented them?
Kelly kettle claim they were invented in the 1890s by a member of the Kelly family but I honestly have not seen anything to support this claim. No photos, patents, adverts or specimens etc.
This seems unlikely to me as they didnât actually start manufacturing them until the 1950s by which time they had been in existence over 20 years.
Thermetteâs patent is 1929 and they were used as âBenghazi Boilersâ in WW2 and issued to the NZ military.
The Sirram volcano kettle was invented in 1928 (Registered design 731794). From what I have seen/understand they saw an early copper Thermette and replicated it in Aluminium.
So is Kelly Kettleâs claim to have invented them just market spin so they can claim to be the original?
What brand would you buy and why?
