We rent a few trucks from uHaul for our camp, one out of SF, one out of Sac, and one out of Reno.
The guy with the Reno rental got a very disheartening call about a week ago about how they may not/probably won't be able to fulfill his reservation. He made the reservation in Nov 2021, for reference. In passing, it was also mentioned that Sac is not going to participate this year.
Today my husband finally called Sac, since we hadn't gotten a call yet (Reservation made in Feb 2022), though we were supposed to by now, according to the person he spoke to back then. They confirmed they have the res for us, but still haven't figured out the "special Burning Man pricing", and that we'll find out when they call to confirm where we pick up, on the day before we pick up. My husband asked if there was someone he could talk to more about the special pricing, since we'll, you know, like to know if we're financially capable of the degree of fucking they're going to try to give us at the last minute, so he was transferred to a different department.
That department told us that UHAUL (not Sac, but all of Uhaul) has decided "not to do Burning Man" anymore. While my husband was sitting there stunned, they hung up on him, and he got the cancellation email about a minute later.
Our SF people are calling to their on their rental, which I don't have any news about it - that person didn't mention anything about Burning Man, which I feel queasy about, since I know that people have had their rentals cancelled at the last minute before when Uhaul finds out about the truck going to Burning Man. I will say that we have going for us that this rental isn't in SF directly, but a smaller town about half an hour out, and it was made directly with that franchise, vs through corporate.
Had we followed the unaware person my husband spoke to first, the spineless fuckers at Uhual would have fucked us over the day before we're due to pick up our truck. Although the CSR told my husband "All of Uhaul" has decided this, I know from my years of experience dealing with all levels of angels and shitstains in the CSR department that there generally is no "All of Uhaul" but regions instead where random power-tripping assholes make decisions randomly about Burning Man, but treat it like "All of Uhaul" is following their policies.
The important thing to note there is that - If you are renting a Uhaul out of Sac, please call ASAP and check on it. Though honestly, probably no matter where you are, call Uhaul if you haven't heard from them lately and check on your rez.
The good news for my camp is that we did manage to switch to a shipping container this year. We will still need to rent a van or two (and I have since secured a cargo van rental from Enterprise in Sac which will be about 1k if we don't get any of their protection policies and about 1.6k if we do), but instead of taking our stuff to the Burn in trucks then loading into the container at the Burn, we're going to make sure to move our stuff into the container pre-Burn.
I would love to know, for cargo vans and trucks, where people rent that isn't Uhaul. I don't know if prices can be any cheaper than what we got, but at this point, we can afford that price (it's pretty much the cost of trucks we'd rented in previous years), and we're making the best of a bad situation caused entirely by the asswipes at Uhaul. I hope whatever shitheads made this decision and decided NOT to contact people about it in a timely manner spend the rest of of their days alternating between constipation & diarrhea and stepping on leggos.
