Hello I am a long islander... and I have been doing some research but I can't find the exact answer I am looking for...
I live with my family in a two family apartment. We have a basement that was made to be an apartment back in the day, but is now out of code I believe (it has a kitchen, bathroom, bed room 6-7 foot ceilings -not sure- and a window in each room) I want to move down their so I have a bigger space.
It is separate from the other apartments, but as I was told "its not up to code" what can I do to change that so I can live down there rent free (don't knownif not paying rent would change anything.
