Who came up with reincarnation? And why?

I imagine it came from Hinduism? And later also taught in Buddhism?

Why is reincarnation taught as opposed to something like heaven/hell or just non-being after death?

To me, Buddhism seems very common sense and rational to me except for the idea of karma and reincarnation.
