I've been interested in Buddhism for awhile, from a philosophical standpoint. My favourite Modern philosopher is Simone Weil. I am not into religion, nor do I buy into myths, or wish to propagate them. However, I have always been interested in spirituality, or at least spiritual principles. As far as worldview I'm a secular humanist and agnostic. My friend keeps wanting me to go to a Vipasanna retreat, but I keep hesitating on that as I need more information.
Things like this is what draw me into Buddhism as well as practices to tame the mind:
Do not believe in anything just because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything just because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything just because it is written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions only because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find it is conducive to the good of one and all, then accept it.
