A while back, there was a thread asking Any songs that Bruce does not particularly like? Which makes me think of the other direction: any songs that Bruce likes but the audience is less keen on?
You can think of the overall concept of Magnum Opus Dissonance. A number of times, the work that the artist puts the most effort and passion into isn't the art that audiences like the most. Conversely, the work that the artist tosses off effortlessly or without a care can often be the work that audiences love most.
Some examples:
- Supposedly, Bruce considers "Living Proof" to be one of his most important songs; it was written after the birth of his first child Evan and was reflective of the immense amount of affection he had for his child. It was the first song written for Lucky Town which lead to a stream of songwriting that completed the album relatively quickly. I don't know if people hate the song, but it's not one I've seen ranked as a favorite, especially on an album that people like comparatively less (though better than its companion, Human Touch).
- More recently, Bruce considers "House Of A Thousand Guitars" to be one of his favorite songs on Letter To You and maybe among his most important songs as a whole; it sums up his philosophy of an imagined community united by music. I personally like the song (certainly the band version), but a lot of people find it repetitive and clunky.
To be clear, I'm not saying that everyone hates or has to hate these songs. I'm just noting that some songs have a disparity between how much Bruce likes the song and how much the audience does.
Maybe American Skin (41 shots)?, this one got a real mixed review from fans and of course police when it was played.
