Most of you are probably familiar with the Wallflowers and Jakob Dylan’s hit song “One Headlight.” If not, here’s a killer performance with Bruce as a guest.
Jakob Dylan obviously draws a lot of inspiration from Bruce in addition to his father, such as the lines “She said it’s cold/it feels like Independence Day” and “This place is old/It feels just like a beat up truck/I turn the engine but the engine doesn’t turn.” Those are among the most obvious Bruce references in the song.
But there’s another, larger one which I think is more often overlooked: the thematic parallels between One Headlight and For You. Here’s why: - Both are songs that sound upbeat, but have darker meanings hidden in the lyrics - Both reference the implied past suicide of the speaker’s lover, but there’s some ambiguity - Both speakers clearly are affected by the death of their lover, but also approach it with some degree of ambivalence and lack of emotion - Both speakers seem to have made peace with what’s happened, while also feeling like there’s never going to be real resolution or closure
Anyone else ever thought about this or drawn the connection?
