Observation about sound waves.
Post Body

Since the GAU-8 Avenger fires rounds at about 3,324 ft/s, and the speed of sound is around 1,125 ft/s, that means someone on the ground would hear the bullet impact the ground before they even heard the gun being fired. From a height of about 4,000 feet (which I think is typical strafing altitude, correct me if I'm wrong), that'd be about a 2.3 second difference. Every video I've seen of the A-10 has the bullet impact noise before the gun firing noise.

Basically, the A-10 is a silent killer. If you're the target, you won't even know you're being shot at.
