As a new player with only lvl 40 chars and 15k cp, how do I get to 249k cp to complete the event and fiend challenges?

After lvl 40 the cost of getting a character to 5x with yellow sliclmes is astronomical. It goes from 21 to 378.. technically I never finished the main story chapters to get access to things like tower and slime dungeons, mainly because I've been doing these last two events and actually reading through the story. Should I just rush through and skip everything just to unlock stuff instead so to improve my characters for this event or is there something else I'm missing?
